iKill: The Use of Robots in Dallas

An ethical debate had taken shape after police used a robot, armed with an explosive, to take the life of a sniper responsible for the Dallas shootings. Although this act was done to prevent further loss of life, concerns had now been raised towards the unconventional way that this robot was used. This was due to it being a last resort to stop the sniper after efforts to negotiate a surrender ultimately failed. According to CTV News, the robot’s role in this incident emphasised the ethical issue concerning the decision by the police to use it. As a result of their decision, it “…raises new questions over when it's appropriate to dispatch a robot to kill dangerous suspects instead of continuing to negotiate their surrender.”
